IPS officer’s brother among 3 militants killed in Shopian encounter

Srinagar, Jan 22: An IPS officer’s brother was reportedly among three militants killed in a fierce encounter that ensued after security forces launched a Cordon and Search Operation (CASO) in south Kashmir district of Shopian on Tuesday.

An Army official told UNI that following specific information about presence of militants in an orchard at Hafshermal in Shopian district, troops of Rashtriya Rifles (RR), Special Operation Group (SGO) of Jammu and Kashmir police and CRPF launched a joint search operation this morning.

However, he said when the security forces were moving towards the area in the orchard, militants hiding inside a hideout, fired at them with automatic weapons. 

“Security forces retaliated ensuing in an encounter, he said, adding additional security forces were rushed to further seal the entire area to foil any attempt by militants to escape.

Official sources said that three militants were killed in the exchange of fire. “The operation was still going on when the reports last came in,” they added.

Army Conducts Lecture On Obesity And Its Prevention At Youth Club Palma

Jammu, July 19: Army organised a lecture on "Obesity and Its Prevention" at Youth Club Palma in Rajouri district recently.

The aim of the event was to increase awareness regarding obesity, its prevention and related health problems to the local populace residing at border villages where basic medical facilities are not available. The lecture was delivered by an Army doctor. Large number of students, teachers, villagers and prominent personalities of the area attended the lecture. The audience were sensitized about the reasons and life style that leads to obesity and other illnesses. The doctor also explained various preventive measures to keep such diseases at bay. The Army doctor interacted with the audience and answered all the queries related to health issues.

The audience were grateful for the awareness provided by the Army which will help in prevention of life style disease.

Baramulla Polytechnic College building to be completed soon: Priya Sethi

The Minister of State for Technical education Priya Sethi informed the house that the construction work of the Baramulla Polytechnic College is likely to be completed soon and it would be accordingly shifted from the present rented building.

 

Replying to the question raised by Mohammad Muzaffar Parray, the Minister said that the Polytechnic College Baramulla is being constructed under the Centrally Sponsored Scheme "Sub-Mission on Polytechnics under Coordinated Action for Skill Development" at an approved cost of Rs 13.00 crore against which an expenditure of  Rs 12.02 crore stands incurred till date.

 

She informed that 80 percent of the work has been completed. “The main building, workshop block including finishing and electrification work has been completed, while the sanitary works are in progress,” she said.

 

She said that Institutional structure of J&K, Skill Development Mission corresponding to National Skill Development Mission has been created by the state.

 

Replying to the supplementary question raised by Sajjad Ahmad Kichloo, the Minister said that the construction work of polytechnic college Kishtwar would be completed by end of 2019.

 

 

Pardeep Sharma also raised the supplementary question on the main question.

Preventive detention cannot be used as an instrument to keep a person in perpetual custody without trial: HC

Srinagar, jan. 22: Vacation Judge of J&K High Court Srinagar Wing Justice Sanjeev Kiumar while quashing PSA of Bilal Ahmad Bhat son of Mohd Maqbool Bhat resident of Drusso Jageer Rafiabad Sopore District Baramulla holds that The preventive detention involves the detaining of a person without trial in order to prevent him from committing certain types of offences. But such detention cannot be made a substitute for the ordinary law and absolve the investigating authorities of their normal functions of investigating the crimes which the detenu may have committed. After all, the preventive detention cannot be used as an instrument to keep a person in perpetual custody without trial.
