Peaceful first phase of polling

Category: Editorial

RAJNI SHARMA  |||||

First phase of local body elections (Municipal Committee elections) ended peacefully. The elections of 11 districts of the state went to polls in first phase of Municipal elections on 8th October 2018 with Rajouri district of Jammu division recording the highest turnout of 81% while as Bandipora district recorded the lowest turnout of 3.4%. The polling remained by and large peaceful with no major incident reported from any poll bound areas of the three regions of the state. It is after a lapse of 13 years that Governor Administration has conducted the local body elections in the state, which remained peaceful throughout the state. This shows that the previous governments were not sincere in conducting the elections to the ground level democratic institutions of the state. The last elections to these institutions were held in 2005 and after their full term of six years, no government conducted these elections.

The valley witnessed a very low turnout, as the separatists and the NC and PDP abstained from these elections. But there remained no absolute impact of militant threats and poll boycott calls of NC and PDP in Jammu and Ladakh regions, where people including women, young and elderly citizens turned out in large numbers to elect their representatives to the Municipal Bodies. There had been no complaint of any major election related violence in all 321 wards, where polling was held on 8th of October 2018 in 820 polling stations after which fate of 1204 candidates was sealed in the EVM's, which would be opened on 20th of October, when the fourth phas of election to the local Body elections will come to an end. In the phase-1, a total of 78 candidates have been elected unopposed.

   These elections once again showed that Kashmir centric political parties are trying to take the union government hostage with some or the other demands but the participation of the electorate showed that these parties are no longer relevant in the state, as they have lost the confidence of the people. Despite the boycott, a good number of candidates of these parties took part in these elections as proxy candidates. People's conference party chairman Sajad Gani Lone has rebuked the boycott call of these parties by saying that these elections have exposed their double standard. He said that the political parties have right not to participate in elections but should then giveaway perks. He said that if these political parties are serious about boycott, its leaders should resign from their positions. He said that he knows the demerits of boycott as his party has boycotted for 20 years. This shows that people of the Kashmir valley have come to know the double standard of these parties. Anyhow, the Governor Administration deserves all appreciation of conducting first phase of M. C. elections peacefully. Let us hope all the other three phases of elections culminate peacefully.
