Women reservations for Sarpanche

Category: Editorial

RAJNI SHARMA | The state govt. has taken a significant decision to provide reservations to the women in Sarpanch seats to empower the women. The state govt. has ordered 33% reservations for women in 4098 posts of Sarpanches in the state. The govt. has also ordered for rotation of words reserved for women, scheduled caste and scheduled tribe in 29402 panches under these order 1366 posts of Sarpanches will remain reserved for women out of 4098 posts of Sarpanches in the state. This decision is seen as a measure of the state govt. to empower the women from the grass root level. The govt. has also made it clear that there will be no reservation for sarpanches other than the women, for whom 33% reservations have been effected from the ensuing Panchayat elections. Earlier the govt. delinked the posts of Sarpanch from the direct elections, for which the state governor has already given assent to an ordinance. Now the elected panches can elect sarpanch of their respective panchayats. In 2011 the elections of Sarpanches were conducted by the people directly, as there were fixed Sarpanch constituencies, which has direct elections. Now the indirect elections to the post of Sarpanches is a major boost for the PDP and BJP govt. It will be a great step towards making the Panchayats more democratic, as the Panches elect their sarpanch and can remove him if his work is found not satisfactory while as earlier it was not possible as sarpanch was elected directly by the voters and could not call him back.
